
Nikolay Sofinskiy was born on February 10, 1958. In 1980 he graduated from Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO), in 1983 – finished postgraduate studies at MGIMO, PhD (Political Science). Has diplomatic rank of Minister Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, 2nd class. Speaks English and Spanish languages.
In 1983-1990 – worked in MGIMO as associate professor, senior lecturing professor and deputy dean of the Department of International Relations.
Started his career in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1990.
1990-1991 – second secretary of the Department of International Organizations.
1991-1993 – first secretary, desk head and deputy directorate chief at the Department of International Organizations and Global Matters.
1993-1994 – deputy chief of the Analysis and Forecast Directorate.
1994-1995 – deputy directorate chief of the Department – Executive Secretariat of the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
1995-2000 – minister-counselor at the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Spain.
2000-2003 – deputy director of the Department of North America of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia.
On November 7, 2003 arrived in the United States to assume duties of Consul General of the Russian Federation in Houston.
Married, has two children.
